Ashanti Farquhar
About
Ashanti is a weaver and before studying at the RCA, she learned how to weave t the University of the Creative Arts, Farnham. During RCA she has been researching into her own identity and heritage using natural dyes and fibres, through a technique called Ikat. Ikat is a highly skilful technique where you hand tie and dye the warp and weft before weaving. This requires a lot of time, patient and determination which Ashanti has demonstrated throughout the MA.
Throughout Ashanti’s practice she works with natural dyes such as madder, turmeric, indigo, tansy and longwood. Ashanti also works with natural fibres and materials such as wool, raffia and paper yarn to create beautiful colours and patterns. Colour is an extremely important part of Ashantis practise as her Caribbean heritage is rich in bright colours.
“My work is strongly about identity, heritage, culture and I delve deeper into topics in my practice and highlight the beauty in being different. I weave large scale woven pieces to create a sense of connection. I am interested in my connection to the Jamaica, having never been. Does memory get passed down through generations? Is where we are from built in our DNA? These are the questions that I am interested in”
Ashanti is supported by the Frank Bowling Scholarship.
