It starts from love and emotion, as both motivation and a theme. I use my emotions as fuel to create, and I want my work to evoke emotion for whoever experiences it.
Making things for the people I love is the most natural way for me to create, so I use this as inspiration while trying to make work that others can engage with, experience and be immersed in.
Art has always been a part of my life, and I’ve also been interested in food and cooking from a young age. In the past I have worked in the kitchen of a fine dining restaurant.
I’ve always kept art and food as seperate practices, but, actually, my approach is the same when working on both: it’s about the process and the philosophy behind it; never wanting to interfear with the thing-in-itself, only wanting to showcase it for what it is, whether a material or an ingredient; trying to understand what’s the right context to create, so that others can experience it for what it is, from my perspective.
Currently, I’m trying to converge art and food into one practice, with hope that this happens naturally, in a way that is my own.
During this past year, I’ve been away from the people I love. I missed them and I missed cooking for them, hosting them, and giving them gifts — experiences and physical objects, which can both carry emotion.
I chose to view this period of longing as part of my creative process. My work was focused on creating a setting.
Now everything is ready for when they come to visit me. Everything is made by hand, my hands. Just how I wanted it, with me immersed in every aspect of the work. When I give something, I give something of myself.
