About

Bénédicte de Nonneville (b. Paris, France) is a multidisciplinary artist based in London. Her many-layered background in finance, gemmology, and also as a private pilot informs her visual language.

Her practice explores the interplay between language, perception, and physicality through layered paintings and immersive installations.

Her work unfolds like a palimpsest: built through a process of layering and erasing, it reveals traces of what came before. Asemic writing, mark-making that resists fixed meaning, draws from influences like Cy Twombly and Roland Barthes, inviting viewers to interpret, feel and complete the narrative. The marks become echoes of lost or unborn languages, resonant with hidden emotion, fragments of thought, glimpses of untold stories, poems. Literature is a force that shapes who she is and a tool and source of inspiration in the construction of her artistic vision.

She alternates gestural violence with meditational spontaneity, which she both needs. She embraces performativity, both in her painting process, which she describes as instinctual, but also in how viewers physically navigate her work. Her paintings and installations encourage movement, inviting a shifting choreography of looking, stepping in, pulling back, a drift between presence and absence, legibility and erasure. In this space, language dissolves and transforms, becoming a site of translation and experience.
