Graduate Diploma 24/25

About

Vivaan is an industrial designer who brings attention to the forgotten aspects of everyday life through objects of light. Their practice involves recontextualizing surroundings to offer new meanings or purposes. The intended audience is anyone whose attention can be captured by placing unconventional lights in conventional spaces. The goal is to create non-traditional lighting units that incorporate a playful element in their function.

As someone newly settled in London and living on a limited budget, they work primarily with materials found in the immediate environment— whether from the trash, side of the street, scrapyards, or charity shops.

With a background in the appliance design industry, they have witnessed firsthand the scale at which objects are mass-produced and parts discarded annually. Their creative practice exists in response to this reality, thriving on the by-products of such industries. Forgotten materials are elevated and given new life, serving as a playful departure from conventional design methods.

The objects they create encourage viewers to recognise the potential in overlooked items and develop a renewed appreciation for what is typically discarded.
