Emma Sproat
About
Emma’s practice deconstructs the restraints historically imposed on sacred art, while honouring the beauty of primitive forms and raw processes. Rooted in feminist ideologies and personal reflection, her work interrogates both external societal structures and internal states of being. As a female artist navigating an increasingly complex and often hostile world for women, Emma’s practice becomes a method of resistance and reclamation.
Her work is intuitive and immediate—a stream of consciousness shaped by urgency and a profound emotional truth. Each piece serves as both a personal exorcism and a public offering, inviting the viewer into a space of shared vulnerability and strength. Emma’s intention is not only to communicate her lived experience but to generate a dialogue around the empowerment of the feminine, reaching both present and ancestral lines.
Materially and conceptually, Emma’s practice treats each artwork as a sacred object—devotional in nature, yet liberated from patriarchal definitions of sacrality and divinity. Through mark-making, texture, sculptural form and the exploration of digital tools, she critiques and reconfigures what it means to be sacred, re-situating the feminine at the centre.
Emma’s artistic pathway has emerged from a commitment to making as a method of knowing, healing, and disrupting.
Her practice continues to evolve through interdisciplinary exploration, lived experience, and a deepened relationship with the land and those who walked it before her.
