Zoe Slater

Ceramics & Glass (MA)

About

Zoë Slater is a ceramic artist whose work is defined by an exploration of scale, texture, and materiality, with a particular focus on monumental forms. Drawing inspiration from personal landscapes and the natural world, her practice delves into themes of decay, transformation, and the ageing process, reflecting on how time and environmental factors shape both materials and the self.

Zoë’s work is deeply rooted in her study of glaze development, using the material’s unpredictability to create surfaces that evoke the passage of time. Her exploration of textures and the interaction of glazes with clay surfaces fosters a dialogue with the materials, allowing them to influence and guide the final form. The application of glazes in her work is highly gestural, creating dynamic, organic textures that mimic natural processes of decay and growth.

Trained in production throwing in South Korea, Zoë’s experience in traditional techniques has influenced her approach to scale and form. The precision and discipline learned during her training provide a foundation for her monumental works, while her interest in material experimentation encourages a fluid, exploratory process in her practice. Zoë is now based between London and Glasgow, where she continues to push the boundaries of her work, experimenting with new materials and firing techniques.

Through her sculptures and large-scale vessels, Zoë invites viewers to reflect on the passage of time, the processes of aging, and the beauty found in both creation and decay. Her practice is an ongoing dialogue with the environment, where the material itself becomes a storyteller, carrying within it the marks of time and transformation.
