Anjalee Malan

Painting (MA)

About

Anjalee Malan (b.1989 London) is a British Indian figurative painter living in London. Raised by a Christian South Indian mother and a Jewish stepfather, alongside a Hindu father, she channels her diverse upbringing to create work that is an embodiment and celebration of multicultural London.

Anjalee primarily uses oil paint to paint scenes from her own life, tackling themes around family, relationships and dual identities. She is particularly interested in the concept of hodge-podge – the unavoidable mix of cultures, ethnicities, religions, beliefs and experiences in which we find ourselves engulfed and is investigating how she can capture this through form.

Prior to the RCA, she received an MA in Classics from Edinburgh University and worked in advertising and marketing for 10 years.
