Bio:
Joe Hodway (b. 1974) is a London based artist who was born in Dubai to a British mercenary and a refugee of Iraqi origin. He has lived in the Middle-East, Europe, and South-East Asia where he absorbed many of the stylistic and spiritual elements seen in his work. He has a BA in Fine Art Sculpture from The University of Wales Institute in Cardiff, and was expelled from an MA at Goldsmiths for a series of works that “crossed the line”.
Statement:
I am interested in the transience of identity and form, and the shared histories we as humans have that fundamentally unite us not only with each other, but with the wider universe.
I position my work as a contemporary parallel to 17th Century Dutch Vanitas and memento-mori still life paintings, which has been informed by the subsequent revelations of post-Newtonian cosmological science. Through this lens identity, attraction, repulsion, life and death can be interpreted as anthropomorphisation of the universal principles that ceaselessly reconfigure matter and energy over time.
I am inspired by urban environments, and the rusting shipping containers on the banks of the Thames near my studio. Like our own bodies, their forms are inescapably physical, but are also in states of continuous transformation. Their surfaces, emblazoned with insignia and serial numbers are records not only of their identities and affiliations, but the very histories of their travels and experiences. Their weathering, scratches, graffiti and corrosion is analogous with how our own stories are recorded by our bodies and minds as scars, wrinkles and memories.
Sustainability is fundamental to my practice. Almost all the paints used in my work are acrylic and vinyl based commercial emulsions. They are salvaged from post consumer sources and diverted from landfill. I endeavour to champion sustainable methodologies, by providing emulatable models for responsible art production. 10% of all my sales proceeds are donated to environmental charities.
