Rachel Coyne

Painting (MA)

About

Rachel Coyne is currently pursuing a Master’s in Painting at the Royal College of Art. She is an alumna of the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture, where she studied in 2019, and the Atlantic Technological Institute in Galway, where she completed her BA in 2018.

Her work primarily explores themes of feminism and social justice, drawing inspiration from artists such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Sylvia Sleigh, Martha Rosler, Judy Chicago, Eunice Golden, Alice Neel, and Tracey Emin, among others. Coyne employs gestural mark-making to create dynamic compositions of figures that encourage viewers to reflect on the societal dynamics between men and women.

Her work is concerned with exposing the patriarchal structures of power that shape our world. As an Irish woman, she is particularly interested in the historical and ongoing role of women – how their place in society has evolved through perseverance, and how far they still have to go. Coyne also explores the relationships between men and women and the strength of female camaraderie.

Rachel Coyne’s work has been featured in group exhibitions across Ireland and New York, and her works are held in private collections worldwide.
