About

Sarah Lloyd  is a British artist with an expanded painting practice. Her interest in how figures emerge from the space within has prompted works on large unstretched canvases and linens. Her practice is informed by her love affair with the Italian Renaissance, alongside contemporary elements that emerge from the coloured fields of paint.  A psychological lens informs her practice. A sense of journeying and movement imbues the work with rhythm and life. The exploration of materiality gives depth to the work and as such, delivers a layered approach. The sense of ridiculous, absurd and uncomfortable are dealt with in a playful manner to explore what it means to be human in a complex world.

Lloyd was born into a fishing community on the East Coast of England. Her paternal grandfather ran a wallpaper and paint business, with her father born above the shop. This rich inheritance propelled her to Wimbledon School of Art in the early 1980’s. In 1983 she was ‘Artist of the Day’ introduced by Maggi Hambling at The Angela Flowers Gallery, London and was awarded the British Institution Prize for Painting from the Royal Academy of Arts in the same year. Her professional experience in psychological research and practice (PhD Psychology)(see Sarah Buckingham: ResearchGate) and personal story of being in recovery from addiction (see The Guardian:Good to meet you), delivers great depth and tension to her work.

Lloyd has studios in London, West Sussex and Vorno, Tuscany.
