Yuying Lu
About
Yuying Lu works primarily with printmaking to explore the layered relationships between memory, identity, and visibility. For her, print is not just a medium—it is a methodology, a way of sensing and translating the imperceptible. She is drawn to its slowness, its fragility, and its capacity to hold contradiction: presence and absence, clarity and blur, repetition and singularity.
Yuying’s work emerges from the experience of being seen—and misread—as an East Asian woman navigating Western visual culture. Through poetic fragmentation, soft silhouettes, and layered textures, she investigates how identity is shaped by what is visible, omitted, or overwritten. Print becomes a space where memory, silence, and care can find material form.
During her MA studies at the Royal College of Art, Yuying has focused on stone lithography for its tactile intimacy and temporal depth. Her recent works reflect an evolving interest in emotional residue, spatial memory, and the body’s entanglement with image and absence.
She approaches printmaking as both resistance and release—a practice grounded in tenderness and critical inquiry. In the Across RCA project, she co-developed a dictionary of uncensorable symbols with women from diverse backgrounds, offering poetic strategies to speak beyond censorship and reclaim lost language.
