About

Darnis Vimonthammawath is an artist who engages mostly with the subject of mythology, religious iconography, semiotics, and poetic rendition of art. His work explores the theme of what is known as ‘comparative mythology,’ the idea of how all the stories, myths, theology, and beliefs of our species are connected, drawn from a single source of origin. He did this through his use of eclectic use of symbolism and motifs from different cultures in portraying subjects of human nature, especially the fragility of our soul. By re-contextualizing old myths and motifs to be used as a medium of communication for a contemporary subject, he attempts to demonstrate the power to connect all people to archetypal images that lie deep within our unconsciousness.

His recent project, The Language of the Birds, dives into the relationship between humans, birds, and Mother Earth, exploring the avian mantle ofprophethood betweenthe emerging race of men and their silent mother through speculative, fictional mythmaking. A series of de-anthropizingnarratives from non-human perspectives invites us all toreflect and resituate ourselves withthe idea that humans are not the soleperpetrators of this world’s narrative, but participants who stand equal withthe rest of Gaia’s children.
