Visual Communication (MA)

About

I’m Zhou Xinrui, a person who records details and emotions through graphic design, and I enjoy seeking overlooked beauty in the visual field.

Drawn to socially and culturally engaged themes, my work often explores overlooked aspects of everyday life and the ways we connect with our surroundings. Visual communication serves as a tool to evoke emotion, challenge perception, and foster meaningful dialogue. My practice focuses on 2D media—photography, illustration, layout, and book design—while also embracing new techniques and tools. In a recent project, I explored illustration and animation to transform still images into rhythmic, emotionally layered narratives.

To me, design is more than communication. It’s a way to build thoughtful connections between people and the world they live in.

Please Eat Me

Concept: This project focuses on the issue of food bias and waste, as research has found that a large number of fruits and vegetables are thrown away because they are ‘not good enough’ to be eaten. Through a book and a promotional video, I tell the stories of these ‘misunderstood’ fruits and vegetables, educate about their nutritional value, show how to give them a second life, and urge people to redefine ‘good food’ and reduce waste.

Keywords: Food waste; Hidden beauty; Natural imperfection
