Shuyan Chen
About
Shuyan Chen is a product designer from China, where she completed her undergraduate studies in Industrial Design in Shenzhen. She focuses on the emotional and social dimensions of design, often responding to underrepresented needs through subtle yet impactful solutions. With a keen sensitivity to human behavior, she translates everyday discomforts into gentle, wearable, and emotionally attuned interventions.
Her graduation project at the Royal College of Art is a discreet wearable cooling accessory for menopausal women, addressing the stigma around hot flashes in public environments. By embedding semiconductor cooling technology into an elegant, brooch-like form, the product blends function with emotional sensitivity.
A companion app allows users to adjust temperature levels and access calming features such as guided meditation. Together, the device and app provide both physical comfort and emotional reassurance, supporting women in feeling more at ease and in control.
In the future, Shuyan hopes to continue designing intimate, inclusive products that support people’s inner experiences, calming the body, soothing the mind, and creating a more empathetic material world.
