Carmen Danae Azor

Innovation Design Engineering (MA/MSc)

About

Carmen Danae Azor is a multidisciplinary artist and designer from the Dominican Republic. Her practice confronts the material legacy of colonialism and petrocapitalism, positioning art and design as instruments for regeneration and resistance. Working across material innovation, decolonial practice, and ecological technologies, she reimagines how materials, communities, and landscapes can shape post-extractive futures. Grounded in Caribbean ecologies and cultural memory, her work centers ancestral knowledge, material justice, and the design of systems that support coexistence between human and more-than-human life.

Her research investigates how materials and data can be used in service of ecological and cultural repair. MUSATEX is a material research and development project creating zero-synthetic, biodegradable yarns and textiles from agricultural waste, beginning with Musa fiber. It functions as both a production model and a collaborative network bringing together farmers, women’s cooperatives, artisans, and mills to develop natural fibers and new yarns that challenge the dominance of synthetics in fashion. ITIBA is a biodiversity monitoring and restoration platform that combines citizen science, bioacoustics, and AI to fill critical data gaps for endemic and endangered avian species across Latin America and the Caribbean, supporting conservation as a decentralized, community-led process.

Carmen holds a double Masters in Innovation Design Engineering (MA/MSc) from Imperial College London and the Royal College of Art. Her work approaches design as a catalyst for material, ecological, and cultural transformations, shaping practices that respond to the urgencies of the present while building frameworks for just and regenerative futures.
