Sarah Tibbles
About
Sarah is a woven textile designer interested in creating texturally engaging surfaces that also materialise unexpected visual qualities and encourage longevity of use. Excited by the process of developing materials, Sarah brings together colour studies, the testing of different woven structures and material research to create playful 3D surfaces.
During her master’s she has experimented with diverse ways to elevate the surfaces of textiles through folding, shrinkage and using geometric shapes to guide the manipulation of materials-combining traditional, conventional and experimental thinking. The motivation for this project was to study to what extent woven textiles can be designed with more flexibility for the body. Equally significant is enhancing the optical interest and definition to the 3D and tactile surfaces added through her play with colour and pattern.
The project has been confronted with the challenges and limitations that the practice of weaving imposes, but tackling these boundaries is what motivates Sarah’s practice. She enjoys the process of testing and modifying varying approaches to fulfil conceptual ideas and mediate experimental with practical thinking.
