About

Xiqiao is a material practitioner at the interface between design and art. Her work is about ‘recycled materials’, and during her studies at the Royal College of Art she delved into the reuse of old recycled fabrics and food waste, and developed an experimental methodology based around sustainable materials. She sees textiles as a language of perception that connects people, nature and the environment.

She is inspired by her concern for the waste of materials in everyday life, especially the potential value of neglected or discarded objects. She collects a lot of used fabrics and buttons from the recycling area of her school. These seemingly useless materials became the starting point of her experiments, and prompted her to think about how they could be given meaning again in a new context. In this way, she hopes not only to extend the life of the materials, but also to provoke the viewer to reflect on the relationship between consumption, waste and recycling.

Her recent series of home decoration works are in between material experiments and art products. These works are not only visually and tactilely appealing, but also attempt to serve as an ‘ecological prompt’, leading the viewer to rethink the relationship between waste and the natural cycle, as well as the expressive role of design in the relationship between industrial manufacturing and sustainable development.
