Zuhal Ozbolat
About
Zuhal Özbolat is a textile designer whose work lives at the intersection of memories, material and atmosphere. Her approach to her practice is inherently interdisciplinary; painting, print, digital manipulation, weaving and material experimentation. The process begins with expressive mark-makings, which then growing into ambient, atmospherical visuals forms and textures. These patterns carry ambiances, shifts, and evocations.
“Surfaces are living records; altered by external forces and capable of holding the memory of those changes. Just as ruins remain active in the mind, their patterns act as residues; visual and tactile forms shaped by intangible yet lasting impressions.” She imagines the textiles itself as a kind of brain: an active surface alive with past signals, threads of memory reconfigured into tangible form. Randomness leads to pattern; pattern enables thought. The edge between chaos and control.
Rooted in a deeply intuitive and performative painting and drawing processes, her designs are guided by muscle memory and subconscious associations; transforming fleeting, mortal experiences into recurring forms, motifs and textures. This personal method, which she refers to as “excavations” serves as haunts of past happenings, allowing what once felt lost or dissolved to reappear and manifest itself in a visual and tactual form in the most candid way.
