Communication (MFA)

MFA Communication is a practice-led interdisciplinary programme that explores the potential of contemporary communication as a radical and experimental creative practice.

Through critical and creative experimentation the program has developed a studio based culture of critical thinking through making. MFA students come from a wide range of creative, cultural and philosophical backgrounds and together challenge and expand the notion of what communication is and can be. With a strong ethos of  professional collaboration, this year’s cohort has engaged with international partners, including Save the Children, Friends of the Earth and Fosters Architects.

The MFA Communication is emerging as the place to challenge and radically transform communication practices.

Drilling is a multimodal mixed‑reality experience, mainly a non-linear Virtual Reality adventure focused on the symbolic and experiential significance of a drill bit. Participants have the liberty to either stand or float in the VR environment, watching a large drill bit come down from above, encircled by a captivating industrial audio backdrop. This project encourages the audience to engage with their part in this captivating journey, envisioning a future that transcends perpetual technological advancement. The goal of this symbolic virtual setting is to provoke contemplation on extractivism, the perception of industrial time, and power hierarchies, and to uncover the emotional paradoxes at the heart of modern energy reliance and technological hopefulness. Case 0X: The Vanishing Child This is a silent psychological play between a mother and daughter—a two-way battle of the heart. Both want to express love, yet it transforms into control and defense. Within a minimal space made of just a table and curtain, an invisible battleground unfolds. On the surface, it appears to be a missing person case. But what’s truly lost need to be found at the scene by detectives （audience） This is not just a personal story, but a generational dilemma: when care becomes a calculated move, and defense becomes a sinful compromise and concession. This publication is one of the core results of the project "Beneath: Symbiosis under the bridge". It simulates the form of the marriage registration system in reality, but transforms its objects from "human partners" to symbiotic relationship units in the space under the urban bridge: such as "moss and stone cracks", "steel and graffiti", "feathers and dust", etc. The publication is divided into two parts: marriage certificate and divorce certificate, exploring the real symbiotic state under the bridge, telling the story between the things under the bridge with poetry, and integrating photography as a true portrayal.
