At the RCA we approach Sculpture as an expanded, self-reflexive, critical activity that draws on interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches as well as a wealth of varied evolving, historical, material and conceptual positions. The 2025 Sculpture MA cohort are committed to extending our understanding of the discipline as an approach to art making: as a material and a dematerialised practice that responds to the pressing challenges of art, society and the world at large.

The piece resembles the skeletal dome of a traditional yurt, stripped of its covering. Made of rough, fibrous materials, the frame appears frayed and decayed, with long, tattered textile strips trailing outward across a textured surface. Chen is a cross-media video installation artist who integrates performance art, sculpture, and streaming media technologies. He cleverly incorporates the humor and highly interactive styles of popular social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram into his performances, combining them with sculptures in real physical spaces to create a multifaceted experience where virtual and reality intersect. Chen’s highly personal performances utilize changes in bodily rhythm and the interplay between virtual imagery and real space to transcend linguistic barriers and reflect social issues faced universally today. For example, in the piece Ah!, he uses duplicated video images of himself exploring the corner formed by two walls, generating a tense and charged spatial atmosphere that examines widespread social anxieties such as catastrophic thinking and uncertainty. Chen’s practice fuses performance and sculpture, endowing performance with a sense of spatiality characteristic of sculpture, while imbuing sculpture with the vitality, temporality, and narrative of performance. By breaking disciplinary boundaries, he builds an artistic system rich in philosophical depth and human empathy. ‘how are you ’2025 ‌ Yingchen Mu

Technology is now present in every part of daily life. I noticed that “nature” is no longer just nature. Plants, rocks, and outdoor scenes are often used as settings for signal collection, data transfer, or environmental monitoring. These natural things are seen more and more as containers—for c a rrying, filt e ring, o r relaying information.
